Rabbi meets the Queen
I thought this was interesting because as a Jewish SCAdian, this question comes up quite a bit.( Video behind the cutCollapse )
ETA: My original intent for posting it here was not so much the fact that she didn't shake his hand but how he approached and walked away from Her Majesty. A common question that comes up is whether a Jewish mundane or a Jewish persona is allowed under Jewish law to bow to a king and/or queen.

Contact for "Clan MacIvri"?
who happens to be a part of this LJ community (but has an empty LJ blog) is looking for someone to contact with regards to Clan MacIviri and Pennsic.
Anyone have info for this Marylander? Anyone know anyone who would?
And I'll be pointing him towards osewalrus
... even though I think pierre_sogol
is part of Bright Hills and not Storvik.

"The Jews of Khazaria" by Kevin Alan Brook
It's 3 days before I leave for Pennsic, so this was a very poor time to start this book. It's absolutely fascinating, and I'll have to make a more in careful read of it when I return from PA.
Has anyone one else read it? Has anyone made a Khazarian persona?

Anybody out there???
Greetings to all! It looks like this group has been a little sleepy lately, but hopefully somebody is still reading it. As you can see, I'm Leofwynn. I just joined LJ. So, who out there is going to Pennsic? I am going and bringing a few friends, we are a nice Jewish clan, Clan MacIvrie (as in "ivri", Hebrew for "Jew"). Also, I am working with another Jewish Scadian in Florida to have a little get-together of the Jews at Pennsic. So, we would love to see anyone who would like to come. Anyone else out there in the NY area? Just curious.... Current Mood: anxious

I didn't really think about whether my persona was Jewish or not (I just started in the SCA) until someone asked me why I wasn't eating the pork chops- in the "in persona only" area. That's when I realized that unless I decided that Lillian was a very picky eater, she'd have to be Jewish. So now my question is- do I have to do anything special? Lillian is a lower middle/artisan class Tudor woman. Should I just wear a standard shift/petticoat/kirtle Tudor outfit, or do I need something different for garb? I've decided that Lillian is a childhood nickname for Elisheva (she couldn't pronounce Elisheva, so it became Lil, then Lillian when that was too childish) and Able is just a standard descriptor name, so I think that's all set. I hadn't chosen names for family members until now, so that's easy enough. Can someone reccomend some good books for learning about what life would have been like for her, or does most of that fall under the category or "history as it *should* have been"? Thank you for helping a newbie.

kosher meat at pennsic
If you keep kosher and are going to be at pennsic the Gaint Eagle on Butler Av in Newcastle will get kosher chickens for you. You should call them and ask, their number is 724 285 6761. Ask for Dave in the meat deptartment. He was very friendly. He may be able to get other special orders as well if you call and ask.

cool idea for a community!
My persona's late period Italian Ren, daughter of a merchant... maybe Jewish ancestors, but seeing as she's merchant class she travels around a lot, so I can justify the Jewish-y things she does....
My activities in the SCA are armoured combat and bardic... and I recently wrote a song in Ladino (a language I don't speak, but learned enough of in order to write the song!)
It's from the story of Jephtah's daughter, ostensibly a song that might have been sung by Judeo-Spanish girls in the late 1500's.
I recently entered it as a story/song combination in a bardic competition at an Event in the East Kingdom - I tell the story of Jephtah's daughter (father makes a vow to sacrifice the first thing through the door if he beats back the enemies... that happens to be his only daughter) from the perspective of the girl. then I sing the song in Judeo-Spanish, Hebrew and English (I added the English because I knew I'd be singing it for a contemporary audience).
People think I'm weird because I write poetry in old languages. Go figure. :-)
Anyway, I think this is an appropriate forum for it, so here's the song. Sorry I can't send the music as well!Lament of Jepthah's Daughter
Abi, abi mi abi
Paso noches nelando
Qu'esto en desespero
Y tra las mis lagrima
You have foresaken me
Ah! No one can stop my tears
Esta noche vos rogos
La galinas estan llorando
Ah no vos vayas mas
Shed no tears for me
Say Kaddish for me
Porque vos esto espero Current Mood: awake

We're on the map
Hello all and welcome to a community of those who want to recreate the Middle Ages the right way...with no Crusaders!
But seriously, as suggested by kmelion
there seem to be a good number of Jewish SCAdians with LiveJournals. As a newly minted SCAdian myself, with all kinds of questions and wanting to meet others of the same ilk, this seems to be a good way to go about both answering questions and meeting fun people.
Welcome one and all.
